Announced by the FIA are the names of the 19 drivers nominated by federations for Pirelli Star Driver European Shoot-out to be held in the form of a one-day rally run in Freistadt in Austria on 23-25 October. From these eighteen drivers, two will be given drives on six rounds of the 2009 world rally championship, along with one selected driver from the African, Asia Pacific and Middle East regional championships. The countries invited to make nominations for the ‘European' Shoot-Out are (a) those nine countries which ran events in the 2008 FIA European rally championship, (b) the other countries in Europe which run world championship rallies, (c) the host country Austria, (d) the Codasur zone in South America and (e) the Nacam zone in Central America. Not yet announced are the types of car each driver will bring to Austria, but this is a secondary issue. The two chosen drivers will be considered not only from their performances on the six stages of the event, but also as a result of interviews. The drivers nominated by their federations to compete in the 2008 European Shoot Out are as follows:

Austria: Andreas Aigner
Belgium: Thierry Neuville
Bulgaria: Todor Slavov
Codasur Zone: Victor Galeano (Paraguay)
Czech Republic: Martin Prokop
Greece: Lefteris Sotirhos
Finland: Jarkko Nikara
France: Guillaume Canivenq
Germany: Hermann Gassner

Norway: Sveinung Bielvedt
Poland: Michal Kosciuszko
Portugal: Antonio Rodrigues
Spain: Lemes Yeray
Sweden: Patrik Sandell
Turkey: Emre Yurdakul
UK : Adam Gould

Federations have used differing criteria in making their nominations, ranging from considering which driver would gain the most in their career experience from the occasion, to which driver will have the best opportunity of winning the awards on behalf of his country. Selected drivers range from very young drivers, such as 18 year old Thierry Neuville from Belgium to Patrik Sandell who was the FIA's 2006 Junior World Champion. Austria's Andreas Aigner is currently leading the 2008 FIA Production Car World Championship.
