Repco Rally Australia entries
Quality rather than quantity signifies the entry list for the draft Repco Rally Australia published today. There are expected to be ten World Rally Cars competing on this event, all 42 world championship entries will be driving four wheel drive turbocharged cars, there will be ten regular PCWRC entries with two locally sourced "Guest" entries as well and a few surprises. Now that FIA homologation for the Auris model has been given, two entries for these cars have been accepted. A total of six entries come from Pirelli Star Driver candidates who expect to tackle only the Thursday and Friday stages. This event will define the first of the five drivers who will enjoy six cost-free drives on the 2010 world championship. There will also be an extra three competitors in a special National Class. These cars will be prepared to national rather than FIA Group N specification, one of which is being driven by a winner of a nationwide find-a-driver scheme arranged by Repco. There are ten regular PCWRC entries and two important Guest entries. The Guests will be Cody Crocker (Subaru) and Neal Bates (Toyota). Four of the regular PCWRC entries will be running different drivers this time, one (the Errani Group Team) for the championship leader Armindo Araujo. Second, third and fourth standing drivers in the national championship are entered for this event, but the new champion Simon Evans is not. Only sixteen of the 42 entries of the full championship rally are Australian.
Will Bates Decide the Production Car Championship?
Australian rally driver Neal Bates is awaiting to know the conditions under which his Australia version Toyota Auris Super 2000 car, which he has entered in the forthcoming Repco Rally Australia, will be homologated by the FIA. On assurances from the FIA that homologation at regional (Asia Pacific) level will be issued on 1st September, Bates has been awarded "Guest" entry status for the Production Car World Rally Championship, for which RRA is the penultimate and crucial round. But whether he will be allowed to score points in the world series is now yet known. The question is whether cars like the Auris which have regionally restricted homologation can score points in a world series. At the centre of this debate is championship leader Armindo Araujo, who has elected to take part in RRA in the hope that the lower quality entry on that event will enhance his points scoring chances. He is also anxiously awaiting news about the appeal by the team of his rival Nasser Al Attiyah against exclusion from the Acropolis Rally in June. As for Bates, this is the only world championship event he plans to enter this year, but maybe he could be a decisive influence in the series! Either issue could affect the outcome of the 2009 PCWRC.
