Iasi Rally 2009 finished earlier, in tragic circumstances, when crew Lucian Garbacea/Tudor Marza were involved in an accident where the pilot was killed. The rally was stopped immediately and the last special stage was canceled.

During the first day of Iasi Rally, Alex Filip and Bogdan Iancu did not leave the town, even if the third stage of the National Rally Championship was on gravel. The super special Ripa Galbena took place on the streets of the city, and crew 79 started the rally in maximum shape..
Alex Filip and Bogdan Iancu finished the super special having the timing of 1:28,1 and at the end of the first day they were on the 3rd position in group A. „We've tried to make a show without loosing too much time. The atmosphere created by the spectators on the stage was extraordinary. We are as programmed and the objective imposed was accomplished, so I am happy with the result. ”, said Alex Filip, at the end of the first day of Iasi Rally.
Crew 79 took the start on Saturday, the second day of the rally, having one objective: finishing Iasi Rally with a victory. On SS Tacuta, the first stage of the second day, Alex Filip raced more prudently and lost 10 seconds in the fight for the first position. Crew 79 increased rhythm and after the fourth special stage they were on the second position in group A „On SS 4 we've done a little mistake, we've done a tête-à-queue and lost around 5 – 6 seconds. Without this mistake we would have been on the first position”, said Alex Filip, in the first service park of the second day
Alex Filip and Bogdan Iancu raced very well on their second evolution on SS Tacuta, Dobrovat and Poieni and they found themselves 2 seconds behind the leader of group A. “All functioned just fine until now. This is our first gravel rally, but we are getting along just fine with the car, and this can be seen in the timings obtained. We will attack these two last stages we have and I am sure we can win this rally”, said Bogdan Iancu, crew 79 copilot, at their second stop in the service park.
Unfortunately , Iasi Rally finished too early because of a tragic accident on SS number 8. „On less than 3 kilometers from the finish line of this stage crew Lucian Garbacea/Tudor Marza, taking the start in front of me, was rolled-over and the copilot was crying for help. At the beginning, because of the high speed we had I didn't notice his intentions, thinking he was trying to tell me to go on, knowing the fact that Tudor Marza was informed of the fact that we were fighting for the fist position in the group. After we've passed them, in a few seconds I have realized his gestures were desperate and not encouraging and we've stopped the car to see what happened. Bogdan Iancu, my copilot got down of the car and ran towards the car 50-70 meters behind us. I did the same thing. I saw then Tudor Marza coming towards us asking us desperately to go to the finish line and announce the emergency ambulance, which was exactly what we did”, stated Alex Filip.
As a result of this accident, iasi Rally was stopped, but unfortunately pilot Lucian Garbacea died as a result of the impact of hitting a tree. “We regret enormously this accident because Lucian Garbacea was a person I deeply appreciated for his modesty and kindness, a person who helped me when I needed help and a pilot with an incredible fair play. All the members of crew 79 would sincere condolences to the family and his son, pilot Lucian Garbacea jr.”, added Alex Filip.
Crew 79 received by default, on SS 8, the same time of the first position competitor - Nistor Duval, and the last special stage was canceled. Alex Filip and Bogdan Iancu finished the rally on the second position 2 in group A.
Starting with Timisoara rally, crew 79 began the campaign ”Race and Help”: for every race Alex Filip's will donate 5 Euro for each kilometer of raced special stage for charity purpose. For Iasi Rally, in the account of “Race and Help” entered the total amount of 576,5 Euro, raised for Hospice Foundation „Casa Sperantei” Brasov, now having a total of 1181,5 Euro.
Cluj Rally, the next stage of the Dunlop National Rally Championship, is scheduled, o tarmac, between June 19th – 21st . Before this rally, Alex Filip and Bogdan Iancu will take the start in Alba Iulia speed mountain contest between June 12th – 14th .
