2000 and 2002 world rally champion Marcus Gronholm, who retired from regular rally driving at the end of the 2007 season, is to return to the steering wheel in active competition at Rally of Portugal. The former Toyota and Ford driver is to drive a 2008 version Subaru Impreza WRC, along with his former codriver Timo Rautiainen, and the car is to be run by Prodrive personnel. Prodrive competition manager Richard Taylor said "at the moment this is purely a one-off, and currently we are checking to see which actual car would be most suitable for Marcus to drive. This is not an Adapta entry, though of course we expect to work closely with them on this event". 41 year old Gronholm has long and mostly fond memories of rallying in Portugal. Portugal was his first world rally outside Scandinavia though it is one event he never won in his career. In the non-championship event in 2008 he drove a zero car, in 2007 he was the victim of the strange "thin-glass" affair which cost him a podium placing and damaged his chances of a third world title.
