The opening all-gravel superspecial stage took place just outside the city of Shaowu that hosts the China Rally; the final round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge this year. The cars raced in front of more than 20,000 rally-mad fans, all of whom cheered on their heroes enthusiastically.

Jarkko Miettinen, the reigning Romanian Rally Champion, had a fast and trouble-free run over the superspecial to secure a slender lead over Salo. Cadong, the top Chinese driver, is just over two seconds behind. However, Fiat Punto diesel driver Marco Cavigioli struggled over the opening stage and now has to make up a lot of time in order to secure the top four result in the two-wheel drive standings that he needs to claim the inaugural IRC 2WD Cup. His only rival for the title, Honda driver Alessandro Bettega, did not make the long trip to China.

Tomorrow the drivers have an early start before the first of six special stages that make up Saturday’s route, with service after three stages and then again at the end of the day. The scene is set for a titanic battle between the two Finns; however the Chinese drivers are also aiming to take advantage of their local knowledge.
