Meeke Excluded from Rally of Scotland

Kris Meeke has been denied his win on the final round o f the IRC championship. the Rally of Scotland, but still retains his IRC title. Rally of Scotland was the second successive British international rally in which the Group N winner (this time also the outright winner) has been excluded on technical grounds. On this occasion, the front subframe on Meeke’s car was found to be more than 2% lighter than the homologated weight for the part (9.68kg). The stewards recognised there was “no fraudulent intent on the part of the entrant or manufacturer” but decided to exclude the car on account of its non conformity. The winner therefore becomes the Skoda driver Guy Wilks. In the previous exclusion instance (Rally GB) it was the Skoda of Eyvind Brynildsen which had been excluded - and this was the same chassis which has now won the rally in Scotland!. It is believed that the FIA is pursuing a policy of strict enforcement in the case of Super 2000 cars on account of their growing relevance to the future World Rally Car formula

Other IRC news
Peugeot are having a bad time with engines. BF Goodrich celebrity driver Adam Gould had valve failure in pre-rally testing then during the event he suffered water pump and consequent head gasket failure.

Peugeot UK announced at the finish that Meeke would compete on the 2010 series, rather than be tempted to contest the new FIA world championship based WRCC ("World Cup"). Meeke said the team much preferred the IRC, where the S2000 cars are top billing rather than a side show. "In the WRC there is big divide (between the top world rally car teams and the WRCC which is part of the PCWRC) but in the IRC there is no divide. Everybody runs customer specification cars, there are no specially prepared cars within a team for the top drivers. And no type of car is light years ahead of their rivals and there is absolutely no animosity between competitors. There was no debate about which championship we would contest". No indication was offered about other Kronos drivers for 2010.

Proton expect to run next year with new camshafts and many small improvements. Alister McRae stated they had tests a new-spec engine before Rally of Scotland but reverted to their usual engine to be sure of gaining a good result, which they did. Team chief Chris Mellors said: "our greatest problems has been a lack of private testing. All our development work has been on actual events themselves". McRae, now resident in Perth, Australia, held third place all through the event.

Opel adventure in the IRC last round Rally of Scotland was a short one. The engine of the Opel Corsa OPC S2000 failed in stage 3. Opel didn’t announce yet their plans for next year.
