The 2009 Rally Ireland was the first world championship rally run on asphalt to be won at an average speed in excess of 110kph. This year's event was won at 110.53kph, more than 7kph faster than Rally Ireland 2007, the only other time it has counted as a world rally. Although the route was very much the same, the increase in speed came from two accounts. Firstly the roads had been washed clean of the mud which characterised the previous event, and secondly various extra stretches of road were added to existing stages, and each of these seemed to be faster. These facts however conceal the difficult conditions this year, where water puddles were frequently and unexpectedly encountered. The fastest Catalunya Rally was in 2008, at 105.41kph, Germany at 103.67kph and Monte Carlo at 103.50kph but Corsica always less than 100kph. Traditionally asphalt events are slower than gravel or winter events. The fastest world rally ever held was Argentina in 1983 with an overall average of 123.5kph (won by Hannu Mikkola in an Audi Quattro) while Marcus Gronholm won the 2004 1000 Lakes Rally at 122.62kph in a Peugeot 307 World Rally Car - with a broken gearbox.
