Hopes that Subaru cars will again challenge the Citroens and Ford in the world championship in 2009 are dwindling. Prodrive confirmed they have been given access to the 2008 championship cars and have already substantially finished building the two 2009 cars originally ear-marked for use in Rally Ireland but there is currently no assurance that a world championship team featuring Subaru cars will be registered for the 2009 series. They have however already released one of the eight Impreza WRC 2008 cars. The car already sold is chassis 08004, C1WRC, rallied on four occasions by Chris Atkinson. In this car he finished fifth in Japan, and the car is now numbered M600WRC and has been acquired by the Adapta team in Norway. Mads Ostberg has been testing the car in Norway ready for the first two national championship rounds in 2009, in preparation for the world championship Rally Norway in mid February. Adapta chief Morten Ostberg confirmed they will enter Mads in eight rounds of the 2009 world championship but it is not yet decided whether they will officially register for the world series. If they do not, only Citroen and Ford cars will count for the 2009 championship.

The Norwegian Championship schedule two rounds in January ahead of the WRC round from February. Sigdals Rally will be runned this weekend on 10th of January and Hadeland Rally on 24th of January. Besides Ostberg, Andreas Grondal will drive the S10 Subaru Impreza WRC recovering after appendicitis and Andreas Mikkelsen a group N Subaru Impreza. PG Andersson will be at the start driving the Skoda Fabia WRC with which he won Romjulsrally in December or at the wheel of his own group N Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9.
