Luis Perez Companc, an heir to the Argentine fuel company fortune, is to retire from active participation in the world rally championship after Neste Oil Rally Finland. After running a full programme with his Munchi's rally team in 2006 and 2007, he announced at the start of the season that he would only make three appearances this year (Argentina, Jordan and Finland) and has now confirmed he will not continue afterwards. The Companc family expanded their South American commercial operations durin the national privatisation programmes in the 90's into the food industry in which the company Molinos Rio de la Plata became the responsibility of Luis and his brother Jorge. Transport difficulties in Argentina this year caused Luis to miss Rally Jordan at short notice. Munchi's is a small ice cream parlour operation within the family business portfolio, an extension of the farming interests of Luis' mother Maria Carmen.

Luis is one of seven children of the family, which has a strong interest in motorsport. Another brother is Pablo, whose career in circuit racing was threatened by a serious accident at Homestead-Miami in 2007. Part of the Companc legend centres around the rallying brothers. On a rally raid event they had a potentially serious accident. At the time Jorge was driving and Luis was the codriver. It is said that mother ordered that Luis should do the driving in future, and maybe for family peace of mind Jorge should codrive for someone else! Jorge continues as codriver for Munchi's other driver Federico Villagra. Luis' codriver Jose Volta has also announced an end to his active participation but will continue to help run the team.
