Lessons after Barum Rally

Barum Rally presented the Opel Super 2000 team with their first major international test and a whole bundle of new lessons. Their driver, 20 year old Andreas Mikkelsen was driving his first rally in a normally-aspirated car, which demanded a change in driving style, and this was the first time Hankook tyres could be compared with those from the established suppliers used by other teams. Team chief David Whitehead explained: "We had a lot of problems but we learned a great amount. The road conditions in Barum were bumpier than we have had in earlier tests with Hankook tyres. We had engine problems on the first day, which were eased when we made changes to the mapping, and a throttle sensor cost a lot of time at the end of the Saturday stages and dropped him to 65th place overall. Andreas also had a puncture early on. We were happy with everything to do with the chassis and the brakes, but we feel that more came come out of the engine". On the second day he pulled back to finish 33rd. Decisions are now being taken as to the next rally for the Corsa. Whitehead: "Ideally this should be Asturias but this clashed with a rally in Norway, in which Andreas is leading the Subaru Cup category, and we are anxious to build on what we learned with Andreas rather than invite a different driver for this event. A decision will be taken soon."

The Proton team had as well a dark rally. "There is only one good aspect to our terrible weekend in Barum (when both Proton Satria Neo Super 2000s retired at the start of the rally) was that both cars suffered from the same problem, so we have only one problem to solve not two!" Chris Mellors reports that the engine problems experienced by the cars came from the same software problem, which caused number two cylinder on each car to fail, which he feels should not be too difficult solve. "Our next event will be Asturias in which we will have only one entry, for Guy Wilks, but we hope to have two cars out again in Sanremo."
