Ford Spain have announced they will support the new Global Racing Nupel rally team in their programmes for 2010 and also their rally driver training programmes. Nupel team drivers Sergio Vallejo and Xavier Pons finished one-two in the Spanish championship in 2009. Cars used will be the Fiesta S2000 and the Fiesta R2. The team will contest eight rounds of the WRC starting in Mexico.
The 2010 African championship Safari Rally is to be run on stages in the Thika and Kajiado regions and will not this year travel up-country from Nairobi. Hopes continue in Africa that the FIA will readmit this open-road rally into the world championship in the future.
Travis Pastrana, the 2009 United States Rally Champion, claimed a record on New Year’s Eve when he jumped his Subaru Impreza a distance of 269 feet (82 metres). The car flew through the air over water at a night time Red Bull sponsored display at Rainbow Harbour, Long Beach, California. He landed his car on a floating barge, the driver having to spin the car to slow it down before crashing into safety barriers.
Norwegian rally driver Mads Ostberg had a shock at the one-day Romjulsrally (29 December). He was entered in his Subaru World Rally Car but had to withdraw as it was impossible to start the engine in the extreme cold (minus 28 degrees). Then as he watched the other drivers set off he was disturbed to see Anders Grondal car approaching in strange circumstances and furiously waived him down. He told Grondal to take more care with his codriver Veronica Engan. Why? “She is my fiancee and you must look after her”. What’s the problem? “Your car is on fire. Don’t you know that?” No, he didn’t! Grondal and Engan unwittingly had spectacular turbocharger problems and had to retire immediately. The event was won by Sveinung Bieltvedt in another Group N Subaru.
