West and Paddon are Chosen Guests
Mitsubishi drivers 33 year old Chris West and 21 year old Hayden Paddon will be the sponsored "Guest" drivers for the Repco Rally of NZ, 11th round of the world championship. Both come from the country's south island, and they were selected from a short list of promising NZ drivers, which included 33 year old Stewart Taylor, 18 year old Andre Meier and 16 year old Sloan Cox, all accomplished rallymen from North Island. Paddon was one of two chosen Guest drivers last year.s
More Rebellion from Monte Carlo!
Released in 2009 from the format shackles imposed by the FIA's World Rally Championship, the organisers of next year's Rallye Automobile Monte Carlo have announced the sort of event they would like to run! The event has already been guaranteed as a qualifying round in the 2009 IRC series, which imposes fewer unifying formats in the layout of qualifying events than the WRC, to which the event will return in 2010. Main features are:
1. a three day midweek event (Wednesday through Friday, with a middle-of-the-night finish on Saturday morning),
2. start and finish in Monte Carlo with two nights away at Valence,
3. a variety of different service parks,
4. entry classes based on the old Group A and N, not the new Group R,
5. four stages to be run at night, including two runs over the iconic Col de Turini, with only sixty out of the (maximum) 100 entries allowed to tackle these stages.
At a press conference in Ypres, the organisers stated this was a deliberate attempt to return to their traditional and historical standards. A lot of attention is being offered by Eurosport for live television coverage both from stages and service parks. It is an event intended to be attractive to both official and private teams. The full calendar of other events that will run in the IRC series in 2009 has yet to be decided.
WMSC decisions
The FIA's World Motor Sport Council (held 25 June 2008) has "directed" the FIA to finalise negotiations for the appointment of a central promoter for the World Rally Championship, a step considered by teams in the sport to be long overdue. Hopes that the Council however would also announce the rules for the new World Rally Cars, due to appear in 2010, were dashed when it was stated that necessary investigative tests had not yet been concluded. Calendar-wise, the events provisionally listed by the FIA last year for the 2009 world rally calendar have been confirmed. The WMSC stated that Cyprus and Poland had both passed the necessary Observers' reports and the positions of these events in the championship were no longer provisional. The 2009 and 2010 world rally calendars were already decided to be of 12 rounds compared with the 15 rounds this year, decided now was that both the Production Car and Junior world championship in 2009 will consist of eight rallies each. This means that four events (Cyprus, Portugal, Argentina and Sardinia) will count for both series, in the way that this year's Neste Oil Rally Finland does. Finalisation of the 2010 World Rally Car rules is believed to be close. Tests to decide the best control system for the central differential are to be carried out next week, and already another debated proposal (whether to force cars to run with MacPherson type rear suspensions) has been solved. This requirement had been abandoned. Furthermore there are unresolved discussions about how to allow noise levels for 2010 World Rally Cars to be raised for reasons of both safety and spectacle. When the new three-layer technical formulae come fully into effect in 2010, there will be some new names. World Rally Cars, in their new form, retain this title. The combined class N4 cars (existing Group N and Super 2000) will be called "Super Production" and Group R in its various alternative tuning levels will collectively be called "Production". The full details of the proposed regulations are still on the FIA's secret list and are not available for public inspection.
Carlsson in disgrace
Former Suzuki and Peugeot team driver Daniel Carlsson, who brought the innovative anti-drink driving campaign sponsorship to world championship rally, has been caught driving under the influence of drink in his native Sweden. In a sad communique he has admitted the offence, stating that it was "dangerous, stupid and unforgivable" and the action was "against his own beliefs". He explained that he was driving the morning after drinking, but this was a risk he already knew about.
Veteran Bates Wins Again
Australian Neal Bates won the two-day Coates Queensland Rally based at Nambour, Queensland, after his Toyota Corolla S2000 teammate Simon Evans crashed on the first day when leading. The 43 year old first won a national championship rally on this event in 1992. The event was run in forests to the north of Brisbane where main rivals were Evans' brother Eli drove a Subaru and former world championship driver Michael Guest in Subarus. Bates was fastest on day 1 but eased his pace on day 2, confirming his overall victory but allowing the other Evans toget the prize for the day. Noticeable at the event was the lack of news about the venue for the world championship Rally Australia, due to run in 2009, and originally said would be based in Queensland.
