Finland and Jordan are making plans to finish their world championship qualifying round rallies on a Saturday, rather than the traditional Sunday. This is an option which was offered when the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council gave consent for event format changes at their October meeting. Already Bulgaria has been ordered by the FIA to finish on a Saturday, because the following day (11 July) is the day of the football World Cup final. The Jordan authorities have explained that the Muslim weekend is Friday and the Sunday is a working day. The Finnish authorities are planning extensive arrangements to celebrate their event's 60th anniversary, which will stretch out into Sunday.
In the IRC series, Saturday finishes are normal. Of the 12 events listed for 2010 only three (Argentina, Sardinia and Barum) are due to finish on a Sunday.. It is not clear whether Rally Argentina in 2010 will be a fully participating round of the series. Hopefully it will, because otherwise there will only be one non-European event in the series (Brazil) and there will be a 15 week mid-season gap between qualifying events. Argentina has been given a date two weeks after Brazil, in the hope of encouraging teams to enter both events.
