The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council meeting on 11th December will be asked to approve a proposal for a new driver’s championship for S2000 cars in 2010. The plan is to break the current and unfair imbalance in performance and costs between S2000 and orthodox Group N cars by creating separate championships. Currently both types of car qualify for the PCWRC series, but this will not continue into 2010. The growing disparity in performance and costs has been an increasing concern. The proposed situation for subsidiary series is as follows:
1) PCWRC 9 rounds, for drivers of orthodox Group N cars only,
2) JWRC 6 rounds, for drivers of two-wheel drive cars as identified by the regulations,
3) SWRC 10 rounds (same as PCWRC calendar with addition of Portugal), for drivers of S2000 cars only and
4) WRCC (“World Cup”) same 10 rounds as SWRC but counting for one-car teams.
The identity of the events counting for subsidiary championships was announced by the FIA at their October World Council meting. Specific decisions about which of the S2000 series count for Championship and which for Cup status are awaited. It is envisaged that the WRCC will be for one season only before the new World Rally Car formula takes effect in 2011.
The nine events counting for the PCWRC series in 2010 will all qualify for no fewer than four championships : WRC, PCWRC, SWRC and the WRCC. Four of them also qualify for the Pirelli Star Driver system. Germany and Alsace will qualify for the JWRC as well.
