African Rally Championship Keeping it in the family. A member of the Singh family has now won the Zambia International Rally for the 19th time! This was the third time Muna Singh has clinched his country’s major rally, but it was close. One second ahead of Muna at the start of the final section of the 33rd Zambia Rally was fellow Zambian driver Mohammed Essa, who was slowed when a rock flattened his exhaust pipe, and he finished a quarter minute behind Muna. Six cars finished the rally, all Subarus. Muna is now seven points behind Zimbabwean driver Jamie Whyte, who finished third on this event, in the FIA’s African championship. One final round of the ARC event is to run, the Zimbabwe Rally.
Middle East Rally Championship Mitsubishi Evo IX driver Roger Feghali, six times a previous winner, scored a seventh win the 32nd Rally of Lebanon, the only all-asphalt round of the FIA’s Middle East Rally Championship. His winning margin was over ten minutes! MERC championship challenger Nasser Al Attiyah failed to start, being delayed in returning from the cross country Rallye dos Seroes in Brazil, where he finished second behind his VW teammate Carlos Sainz. Saudi Peugeot 207 S2000 driver Yazeed Al Rahji finished third and took the lead in the series with Nick Georgiou – Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX on forth place.
Petter Solberg secret test Tested, liked but probably rejected. Petter Solberg checked out David Salanon’s powerful French championship five year old ex-works Peugeot 307WRC in a back-to-back test at a secret venue in France but is expected to stay with his 2001 Citroen Xsara WRC for Neste Oil Rally Finland. Petter’s Finland plans are to be finalised this coming week.
Fabia Super 2000 wins in Slovenia Austrian Raimund Baumschlager won the Maribor Rally in the Skoda Fabia S2000 which Patrik Sandell drives on PCWRC events. Second was Andreas Waldherr in a VW Polo S2000. The Gassner family finished third and fourth with Junior beating his father while Manfred Stohl with the CNG Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX finished fifth. The first local driver was the sixth placed Darko Peljhan, several times Slovenian champion.
British PSD candidate 19 year old Cumbrian Fiesta driver Kris Hall has been selected by the British federation as their representative on the Pirelli Star Driver Shoot-Out for European drivers. This will take place September 18-20 at Freistadt in Austria.
New Ford
Ford’s new Fiesta R2 made its competition debut at the Isok Istanbul Rallisi, third round of the Turkish championship in the hands of Emre Yurdakul but retired on the first day.
Rallysprint in Czech Republic
First and second cars on the Impromat Rallysprint Kopna in Czech Republic were the Fiat Grande Punto S2000 cars of Czech driver Jaromir Tarabus and the Pole Grzegorz Grzyb. Last year’s winner Roman Kresta led in his Fabia WRC before stopped by fuel pump problems. The event was noted for the appearance of Slovakian driver Lukas Lapdavsky in the 75th Peugeot 207 Super 2000 rally car to be delivered. The world total of all S2000 cars is believed now to be around 200.
