It will surely happen soon, so will Rally d'Italia Sardegna see the fortieth world rally victory for Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena? Certainly they have personal scores to settle after the accident on the event last year, but this is becoming traditionally an open event. Three different makes of car have won this event on the four occasions the Italian world championship has been held on this Mediterranean island. There is already a major anniversary about this year's Italian championship rally. It is the fiftieth event in the line of world class rallies in Italia, a series which began before the second world war and which continued strongly through the Sanremo rallies.

The soft and almost sandy gravel roads wind through a combination of unspoiled green mountainsides that contrast with the sometime dusty and rocky routes of the lower regions. The traction and braking stability of the cars will be really tested by the loose surfaces. The rally takes a familiar character to before save for a special short televised final stage, held behind the coastline of the Cala di Volpe, the legendary Costa Smeralda resort immortalised by the James Bond films, while the Ceremonial start and the finish are on the nearby quayside at Porto Cervo.

The official teams did not change their line-up. Citroen, Ford, Subaru and Suzuki will count on the same drivers while Henning Solberg will compete together with Federico Villagra for Munchi’s. Galli and Wilson will score points for Stobart. Conrad Rautenbach and Urmo Aava will be again at the start driving the semiofficial Citroens as well as the two young rival Norwegian drivers Andreas Mikkelsen and Mads Ostberg. As the gentleman Dutch driver Peter van Merksteyn, who last year astonished local residents with the size of the yacht which he parked in Porto Cervo!

After the championship exclusion of Lithuanian driver Vilius Rozukas announced in Jordan, all the 17 drivers remaining in the Junior category plan to take the start, though Francesco Fanari, the leader of the Rookie's award, will change teams albeit still running with Citroen. For us the entry of Bogdan Stanoiev in the Sardinia Rally Italia is the most important fact. He becames the 4th Romania driver entering the new format WRC after Titi Aur, Dan Gartofan and Claudiu David. Let’s wish him luck !
