22 year old Hayden Paddon from Geraldine in the South Island of New Zealand has become the second successive driver from his country to be judged the winning Asia Pacific candidate for the Pirelli Star Driver award. He is the first of the five drivers who will have a full paid programme of six world championship rallies in the 2010 calendar. Of the five drivers being assessed during Repco Rally Australia, he was judged not only on his driving skills but also his personal presence as well. Although it was only necessary for drivers to be judged on the first nine stages of Rally Australia, and the other contenders withdrew from the event at that point, Paddon elected to continue on the event. Interesting to note that Mark Tapper, the winning 2008 Asia Pacific PSD competitor competed on this event privately, and crashed heavily on the first full day.
