26 year old Kenyan Mitsubishi driver Peter Horsey from Mombasa finished second on the Rwanda Rally and was selected as the African Rally Championship’s Pirelli Star Driver award winner. He was leading the rally until the final stage when a puncture demoted him to second place behind Subaru driver Giancarlo Davite. Out of a total of 16 starters, seven PSD candidate drivers took the start of this event, which itself was a candidate for a return to the FIA’s African series, but in the eyes of the judges Horsey was noticeably the most competent driver. Zambian Mohammed Essa went off the road, Raaji Bharij rolled, Peter’s younger brother Alex Horsey had transmission trouble. Horsey’s father David was the FIA’s African champion driver in 1984, when he tackled the series in a Peugeot 504 Pick-Up, and Peter himself came close to winning the PSD award in 2008 before being defeated on the final round by Jon Williams. The rally itself was enjoyed for its smoother roads than many other African events. The crews had difficulty in recce to cover the stages twice because of delays caused by rain, but the rally itself was dry and dusty. Horsey fills the fourth of the five vacancies for the PSD award. the winning candidate from the FIA’s Middle East series will not be known until December.
