Proton Getting Serious
Rally Ireland was the second rally appearance of the Proton Satria Neo S2000. The car driven in Ireland by Niall McShea was the same one driven last year by Bryan Bouffier in Antibes. Chris Mellors, chief of the British company MEM which are developing the project, says "Antibes produced various small issues, including the fuel return valve failure, then a problem with the engine which we discovered was caused by an over-rev the previous day on a test. The car certainly seemed to be reasonably competitive straightaway". The set-up for Rally Ireland was quite different to Antibes, on account of different surfaces and weather, also in Ireland all four wheel drive cars had to use Pirelli control tyres whereas in Antibes BF Goodrich tyres were used. BF Goodrich's tyres are a lot softer compounds and are changed much more frequently, they have softer sidewalls so there is much more suspension within the tyres. The car used control fuel both in Antibes and in Ireland.
Three cars have already been built (one for Ireland and one to Malaysia as a promotion) the fourth and fifth cars are being assembled at this time. It is hoped to gain as much experience this year as possible in different championships, for example IRC, WRC and national championships, gaining an all-round feeling of how the car reacts on different events and in 2010 the company would seriously like to be in the WRC and IRC. For the future it would be good to develop a turbo version. The Proton company in Malaysia want to explore all the possibilities, Proton feels it is a growing brand and are seeking worldwide distribution systems. Mellors: "It will be exciting if we can do that. We understand that if Proton proceeds with a Super 2000+ car, they like other manufacturers would have to register for the World Rally Championship, but we assume this would be on a limited-event basis for the first and second years".
