Walking round the service park at Hamar during Rally Norway was a new breed of wild animal. The frozen rally driver. In the coldest world championship rally for many years, these crazy animals were seen in their rally cars, driving along with their windows open to the elements...
The first driver to found himself really cold was Mads Ostberg. He was driving one of the new Subaru Impreza S14 World Rally Cars, and his problem was that the inside of the windscreen was frozen. He could not see out of the car. However much he adjusted the in-car heater, the visibility from inside the car was almost zero. The only way the problem could be reduced was by driving along with the side windows open. Meanwhile the Adpata team, with their Prodrive staff who used to handle the Subaru World Rally Team cars, worked out just how little the side windows had to be opened in order to have a minimal acceptable limit of vision for the driver.
Second driver in deep freeze trouble was Jari-Matti Latvala. His window opening was involuntary. The codriver's side window kept slipping down. This was one of the new side windows installed by Ford in order to fit around the special safety foam inserts inside the door. Codriver Miikka Attila suffered the agonies for the Friday, and happily his service crew were able to prevent the problem happening later. Jari-Matti's teammate Mikko Hirvonen was also walking round in a dazed and inflexible manner. "My trouble was that the heater was too powerful. By heating the windscreen there was such a severe heat differential between the outside and the inside of the windscreen glass that misting was immediate and impossible to handle. But we found a solution. We could keep the windows closed and instead open up the roof vent to the maximum amount. It will take me weeks before I really thaw out after Rally Norway..."
