Eugene Donnelly won the Galway International Rally in a Skoda Fabia World Rally Car, the first round of the Irish championship and a useful pre-Rally Ireland trial run for many competitors. After an early delay with a puncture Donnelly inherited the lead when the Subaru Impreza World Rally Cars of both Eamonn Boland and Kevin Lynch retired with engine problems on the second day. Gareth MacHale took second place in a Focus WRC and Peadar Hurson was third in another Impreza WRC. In Group N the winner Anthony O'Halloran's Mitsubishi finished fifth overall beating the Subaru Impreza of Sean Flanaghan, by 4.8 only seconds, overtaking his rival on the final stage. Car number one was Conrad Rautenbach who entered the event in a Citroen Xsara WRC to try out the two different types of Pirelli control tyres to be offered drivers at Rally Ireland, also his new codriver Daniel Barritt. He retired on the second day when he had engine problems and went off the road. JWRC contender Aaron Burkart also entered the event as a pre-Rally Ireland test run, at the wheel of a Suzuki Swift S1600.
This is the second victory for a Fabia WRC this year: PG Andersson won the opening round of the Norwegian series in one of these cars as well.
