Paraguayan driver Alejandro Galanti has scored his second victory in the FIA’s South American Codasur zone championship at the wheel of an Australian prepared Toyota Corolla Super 2000. He had already won the Trans Itapua Rally in Paraguay in August, now he has won the Rally Atlantico in Uruguay. The series had already been clinched on the penultimate round by Subaru driver Raul Martinez.
22 year old New Zealander Hayden Paddon is doing well. Not only did he win the national championship, Group N in Rally Australia and the Pirelli Star Driver award enabling him to contests all six rounds of the PSD programme in 2010, he has now won the Rally New Zealand Rising Star International Scholarship. The NZD50,000 award will enable him now to enter the PCWRC series the two extra rounds of the PCWRC which will entitle him to aim at a world rally title as well.
The FIA’s WMSC “World Council” meets on Friday 11th December, on which date the full regulations for championship rallying as well as the technical regulations for the 2011 World Rally Cars are expected to be unveiled.
Canadian driver Andrew Comrie-Picard has won the two nations North American Rally Championship at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, the first championship victory for this model car. This title came when he finished second on the recent Tall Pines Rally in Canada.
Still no final decision taken about the headquarters for the Rallye Alsace, the French round of the 2010 WRC. Strasbourg remains favourite. Major changes in the event format are being considered for the 2010 Rally of Finland, to celebrate the event’s 60th anniversary. Announcements are expected within two weeks.
34 year old Finnish driver Janne Tuohino, absent from the world rally championship for three years, plans to make a return at the wheel of a Ford Fiesta S2000. He intends to tackle events counting for the WRCC team cup, starting with the Swedish Rally. Tuohino has twice been a Finnish national champion, and his best results in the WRC have been fourth in Sweden in 2004, with fifth in 2005 in Neste Rally Finland. Other Fiesta S2000 driver will be Xevi Pons part of a team runned by Luis Moya. His first event will be Rally Mexico.
Final round of the Middle East Rally Championship, the last regional rally of the season, takes places in Dubai this weekend (December 3-5). Three drivers (Nasser al Attiyah, Misfer Al Marri and Jazeed Al Rahji) are able to win the MERC title. This event will also see the final shoot-out for the MERC sector of the Pirelli Star Driver candidates, in which Nick Georgiou (the unlucky candidate last time) is favourite to win the award.
