Last minute changes to the world championship rules for 2010 have finally been defined by the FIA’s WRC Sporting Regulations, published today. The main clarification is that the new Super 2000 formula will run under two names. The drivers’ award will be called the Super 2000 World Rally Championship, while the teams award (for single car teams) will be called the WRC Cup, which was originally titled ‘World Cup’. These are two names for the same series of ten rallies, nine of which coincide with the calendar for the Production Car World Rally Championship, for which Super 2000 cars are no longer eligible.
Other issues include:
a) The experimental plan to allow additional “Guest” drivers in the PCWRC and JWRC has been dropped for 2010. Only two Guest drivers can be admitted, as in earlier rules,
b) All cars registered for the world championship shall make at least four passes on shakedown,
c) Turkey will now be considered a European rather than a long-haul event,
d) Otherwise normally homologated cars which have been further modified according to local tradition can, so long as there is not perceived performance advantage, take part while cars of models accepted into local championship events may also be admitted into world championship events. These will be called National cars.
e) Crews can now be 30 minutes late at a time control instead of the previous 15, though the total accumulate lateness in one part of a rally remains at 30 minutes. Specifics defined by the recent World Motor Sport Council include a decision that all Priority crews on World Championship rallies shall be required to use the new 8860-2004 specification helmets.
